Step 3: Preserving the Green Layer

Rather than removing the outer surface entirely, artisans preserve selected portions of the bamboo's natural green layer while carefully carving away surrounding areas.
Through techniques known as full retention, partial retention, subtle retention, and selective removal, artists create images with remarkable depth and tonal variation.
The remaining green surface acts almost like ink in a painting, while the exposed bamboo flesh forms the highlights and background.

The artisan must precisely control the depth of every cut while maintaining the delicate balance between the preserved bamboo skin and the exposed layers beneath.
