HERITAGE EMBROIDERY

Painting with Silk Threads

Random Stitch Embroidery is one of China's most celebrated embroidery techniques, known for transforming silk threads into painterly artworks.。Originating from China's intangible cultural heritage, Random Stitch Embroidery transforms silk threads into painterly textures and lifelike emotion.

Many people mistake Random Stitch Embroidery for an oil painting at first glance. Its silk threads move like brushstrokes — layered freely to create depth, texture, and light.

From afar, it feels painterly. Up close, every detail is stitched entirely by hand.

Where Thread Becomes Brushstroke

Unlike traditional embroidery, random-stitch embroidery does not follow fixed stitch directions. Artisans combine layered stitching techniques to create depth, texture, light, and movement — much like painting with silk thread. What appears spontaneous is carefully controlled by hand. Through thousands of overlapping stitches, each piece reveals the unique warmth and vitality that only handmade embroidery can achieve

Lacquer Painting Craft

漆艺彩绘

Traditional lacquer painting combines hand-painting, gilding, and decorative techniques to create elegant handcrafted artworks. Using fine brushes and natural pigments, artisans carefully paint flowers and traditional Chinese motifs onto each comb. Through repeated painting and polishing, the surface develops rich color, depth, and a refined luster, preserving the beauty of traditional Chinese craftsmanship in every piece.

Xu Bingfang
MASTER OF LIUQING BAMBOO CARVING

Xu Bingfang

A Lifetime Devoted to Bamboo and Tradition

Born into a family of bamboo carving artisans in Changzhou, Xu Bingfang has spent decades preserving one of China’s most distinctive heritage crafts — Liuqing Bamboo Carving.

Unlike ordinary carving, Liuqing Bamboo Carving requires artisans to carefully preserve the bamboo’s natural green surface while carving landscapes, poetry, flowers, and scenes inspired by traditional Chinese culture.

For Xu Bingfang, every piece begins long before the carving itself. Bamboo must be selected in winter, naturally aged, and prepared through years of careful treatment before it is ready to become art.

Today, his work carries forward generations of craftsmanship, transforming humble bamboo into objects that preserve memory, culture, and beauty.

The Philosophy of Slow Craftsmanship

In the quiet rhythm of blade against bamboo, time becomes visible. Each stroke is a meditation, each layer removed reveals not just surface, but centuries of literati tradition. The留青 technique demands restraint—what remains uncarved is as vital as what is taken away. This is the language of negative space, of Eastern aesthetics, where emptiness holds meaning and silence speaks. The marks of time are not flaws but signatures of devotion, proof that true craft cannot be rushed, only honored.

Selecting Bamboo / 选竹

Selecting Bamboo / 选竹

Only mature bamboo, aged three to five years, carries the density and grain required for留青 carving. The selection is intuitive—a matter of touch, weight, and decades of knowing.

The blade removes only the green outer layer, revealing the pale flesh beneath. What emerges is not drawn but uncovered—a landscape, a poem, a memory held within the bamboo itself.
Finishing / 完工

The final stage is patience. The bamboo is left to age, its colors deepening, its story settling into permanence. Time completes what the hand began.
