Meet Our Master Artisan: Tan Yi
Born in the picturesque Jiangnan region of China, Tan Yi was drawn to art from an early age. Inspired by the beauty of traditional Chinese painting, poetry, and embroidery, she spent her childhood sketching and exploring creative expression. Her passion eventually led her to pursue formal studies in textile and fashion arts at Changzhou Institute of Textile and Garment Technology, where she began her journey as a professional craft artist.
Committed to refining her skills, Tan Yi continued her studies at Suzhou Arts and Crafts Institute and Jiangnan University. Today, she is a member of the Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Society and a recognized district-level inheritor of Changzhou's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
For more than a decade, Tan Yi has dedicated herself to preserving and innovating the art of Changzhou Random-Stitch Embroidery. Her "Qingyi Hand Embroidery" series reflects both strength and elegance, combining expressive creativity with meticulous craftsmanship. Whether portraying people, landscapes, flowers, or cultural themes, her works reveal a unique balance between passion and restraint, earning admiration from collectors in China and abroad.
Tan Yi believes that true art carries both authenticity and spirit. Each embroidery is created through countless hours of observation, planning, and stitching, transforming fine threads into painterly compositions rich in depth and emotion. Her works often blur the boundary between painting and embroidery, showcasing the remarkable versatility of the random-stitch technique.
Throughout her career, Tan Yi's artistry has received widespread recognition. Her award-winning works include Xiren from Dream of the Red Chamber, Living Expression, Tingting of Wenchuan, Looking Back, Ji Gao Floral and Bird Series, Young Girl, Qingguo Lane, Golden Autumn, and Rhythm of Colors. Several pieces have been honored at national and provincial exhibitions, while her work Floral Still Life has been collected by the Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Fine Art Museum.
For Tan Yi, art is not merely a profession but a lifelong pursuit. She continues to follow her heart, exploring new possibilities within traditional embroidery while remaining deeply rooted in the cultural heritage that inspires her work. Through every stitch, she carries forward a centuries-old craft and shares the beauty of Chinese embroidery with the world.
